The Lemon Myrtle, or Backhousia Citriodora, Tree is native to Australia. It is medium in size and grows lance-shaped, dark green leaves which stay on the tree all year round. It also grows creamy white flowers in clusters on the ends of its branches between summer and autumn.
In order to extract essential oil, the leaves are harvested. Whilst this can be carried out at any time of year, it is usually avoided during the wet season. The essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves immediately after harvesting to ensure that the oil is of the highest quality.
Lemon Myrtle has a long history of use by Aboriginal Australians, who recognised its benefits as a herbal solution for various purposes. It is a cleansing essential oil, making it ideal for purifying and disinfecting the home. When applied topically, it also cleanses the skin. Alternatively, use aromatically to incite feelings of calmness and positivity.
